PRESERVE RURAL HERITAGE, PROTECT HISTORIC PLACES THAT MATTER

Small towns, main streets, and farms across our region and country are vital to community identity. We believe that protecting old buildings and landscapes builds a strong sense of community, brings different generations together, and encourages a better future for everyone.

MY RURAL HERITAGE IS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO PRESERVING AND RECOVERING ARCHITECTURAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE.

We live in the Midwest, where many small towns began in the 19th century. The buildings are made of stone, brick, wood, and metal. You can find small churches, craftsman houses, and old barns throughout the area.

Rural historic places – cemeteries, vernacular buildings, and cultural landscapes – are often lost without documentation and protection. These places hold the history of communities.

How We Work

PRESERVATION

Protect historic sites and buildings through research, advocacy, and community projects.

Preserve historic buildings and sites that reflect the cultural and architectural history of communities. Through research, documentation, and preservation planning, we support responsible stewardship of the built environment. Our work ensures that historic places remain meaningful and protected for future generations.

RESTORATION AND REHABILITATION

Restore and reuse historic spaces to serve current community needs.

Historic buildings can anchor vibrant and resilient communities. We promote the rehabilitation, adaptive reuse, and revitalization of historic buildings, sites and neighborhoods. By bringing these places back into active use, we strengthen local identity and support sustainable community development

Build
Networks

Partner with local governments, nonprofits, and residents to promote rural heritage.

Rural landscapes and small towns hold an important part of our cultural heritage. We connect communities, researchers, and preservation professionals to share knowledge and resources. Through collaboration, we empower local initiatives to protect and celebrate rural heritage.
